School Celebration in Rapid Lake

September 28, 2017

This year, we are celebrating school in a BIG way with the students of Kitiganik Elementary in Rapid Lake, Quebec. The community has finally been approved to build a new school — this is great cause for celebration! We are pleased to announce the presence of several honoured guests, including Fred Sasakamoose (NHL's first Indigenous hockey player) who will be making a special announcement with us that day, the president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union and his team who will present a plaque for reconciliation (a project facilitated by ILFP, where the students of Rapid Lake made drawings to represent community for the creation of plaques in support of reconciliation that are now proudly displayed in UFCW offices across Canada), and a group of 30 students from Symmes-D'Arcy McGee High School in Gatineau who are joining us for a cultural exchange as part of their commitment to fostering community and reconciliation. This year's theme: We Are All-Stars! The day will feature a soccer game with a giant inflatable ball, potato sack races, henna tattoos, face painting, 20-ft bubbles (a science activity where the students can actually stand inside a bubble), a hockey challenge, the creation of All-Star mural to be signed by Fred, a gift-filled shoebox distribution and much more!

Join the fun! Here are simple ways you can help make this day a huge success: send us a gift-filled shoebox by mail or pack one online, send us your best wishes for the students and we will convey them on that day, we are looking for the donation of two tablets as year-end prizes for overall Best Attendance — can you donate? Support us financially or as a sponsor: this year, we will visit Kitiganik Elementary School many times as we deliver a new public speaking program and establish a micro-business project with the older students — we cannot carry out these activities without your needed support.
